Common questions

Freelance pricing FAQs

How is my hourly rate calculated?

We divide your take-home goal by (1 − your estimated effective tax rate) to estimate required pre-tax profit. Then we add annual business costs, apply your contingency buffer and divide the total by billable hours per week multiplied by the working weeks in the year.

Are billable hours the same as working hours?

No. Billable hours are hours you can charge to a client. Time spent on proposals, administration, sales and learning often cannot be billed.

Does switching currency convert the amounts?

No. Currency selection controls the unit shown next to the values; you must enter amounts in the selected currency. Live exchange-rate conversion would require a separate data source.

Should I charge an hourly or fixed project price?

Hourly pricing works well for uncertain scopes. Fixed pricing can work for clearly defined deliverables. The project estimate here multiplies your billable hours by your baseline hourly rate; you may need an extra scope or risk allowance.

Is this accurate for my country's taxes?

The calculator uses the effective tax percentage you supply, not tax brackets from any specific country. For filing or contract decisions, confirm your actual obligations with a qualified local advisor.
