Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to take AWS certifications in order?
There are no strict prerequisites β AWS doesn't force you to pass lower-level exams before attempting higher ones. However, the knowledge built at each level is genuinely needed for the next. Skipping Cloud Practitioner is fine if you already work in IT. Skipping Solutions Architect Associate before attempting Professional is risky unless you have 2+ years of deep AWS experience. Follow our roadmap sequence for the best pass rate and least wasted money.
How long are AWS certifications valid?
All AWS certifications are valid for 3 years. You can recertify by passing a higher-level exam in the same domain (which automatically recertifies the lower cert), or by passing the same exam again. AWS also offers a free recertification path through their online proctored exam portal closer to your expiry date. Starting in 2025, AWS introduced a new recertification-only exam option at a reduced fee.
Is the AWS Cloud Practitioner worth it, or should I skip to Associate?
If you have zero cloud background, Cloud Practitioner is worth it β it builds your mental model and gives you a 50% discount voucher for your next exam, saving $75 off an Associate exam. If you already work in IT or software development, skip it and go straight to Solutions Architect Associate. It covers all the fundamentals anyway and carries significantly more weight with employers. For most career changers, the CLF-C02 is a useful confidence builder but not a career differentiator on its own.
Which AWS certification has the best salary ROI?
Based on 2026 salary data, the Solutions Architect Associate offers the best return on time and money β averaging $125,000/year with only 4β8 weeks of study required. The Machine Learning Specialty has the highest absolute salary at around $160,000, but requires 3β6 months of preparation and hands-on ML experience. For a career switcher, SAA-C03 gives the fastest path to a meaningful salary increase. For someone already in cloud, stacking a Professional cert adds 10β20% salary premium on top.
Can I get AWS certified without any hands-on lab experience?
For Cloud Practitioner, yes β it's largely conceptual and can be passed with video courses and practice exams alone. For Associate and above, hands-on labs are strongly recommended. AWS questions are scenario-based and test practical judgment, not just definitions. AWS offers a free tier account that gives you enough compute, storage, and networking to practice everything you need. Tools like AWS CloudShell, the AWS console sandbox, and platforms like A Cloud Guru labs or Whizlabs hands-on labs are excellent supplements. Professional and Specialty exams are nearly impossible to pass without real-world experience.
